PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY, INC.
SAINT GEORGE'S DAY AWARDS
Beginning before
1974, the Society has held a dinner event on the Sunday nearest
to April 23 to celebrate the anniversary of the erection of Prince
George's County. That date was chosen back in 1695 as an appropriate
date for the erection of the County by the State Legislature because
it is St. George's Day. In 1974, the Society began the tradition
of giving St. George's Day Awards to deserving individuals and groups
to mark the occasion. The 176 individuals and 74 institutional recipients
have been cited for everything from the restoration of a significant
historic treasure to the creation of a new artifact for the future.
The awards "honor those persons or organizations that have
made a difference in Prince George's County. Contributions range
from celebrations of our rich history, preservation and restoration
of historic sites and buildings, production of written works that
report our history and educate ourselves and our children, and volunteer
efforts that enhance communities and the sense of history the Society
supports and encourages." The recipients, and the reason for
their selection have included (to find a particular name in this annual list, you can use the "find" or "search this page" option in your browser or click on the link to the year if you're looking for a specific year's awards):
